Mudit Jain & Rishabh Jain, Co-Founders, QriyoIndian Private Tuition market estimated to be at $16 billion in year 2017 seems to be rapidly growing. It has seen growth at staggering 30-35 percent in last few years and is estimated to grow to $25 billion by year 2020.

A survey conducted by National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) states that one student out of every four takes private tuition. The Indian private tuition market is divided among four vertices classroom coaching, small study groups, one-on-one home tuition and online live/content driven. Out of these, 97 percent is physical or offline mode of tutoring. Online content and live tutoring business is pegged at just Rs.3500 crore in this 1.05 Lakh Crore industry. The distribution amongst the offline tutoring industry is hazy. Due to highly fragmented nature of industry, neither the numbers nor class-wise distribution is available.

The market was all unpredictable wayback in 2015. There was no concrete numbers on market size of Home Tuition industry in India, nor the distribution amongst classes and courses. Online plat-forms with wider reach were largely selling leads, hence they were unable to track the conversion. Small tuition agencies were able to track conversion but had very less reach and sample size. Also since most of these portals and agencies focused on academics and non academics, one-on-one learning was completely unorganised.

However, things have changed in last two and a half years. Today, we have concrete findings based on a year’s data, that is between Nov 2016 and Oct 2017. The data is collected from a sample of 5000+ paid home tuition booking from six
very different cities, in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh and Jodhpur, Udaipur and Ajmer.

Category Wise Distribution of Home Tuition
Academics is a major and the biggest home tuition category and there is no denial to this very basic fact. We also know that Extracurricular, Health and Vocational training is a growing trend, The Home tuition data suggests that, given good accessibility to quality private tutors, the urban population not only spends on non academician activities, but it spends a huge and significant sum in this direction. The data shows almost 30 percent of tuitions are in non-academics space.

The distribution amongst the offline tutoring industry is hazy. Due to highly fragmented nature of industry, neither the numbers nor class-wise distribution is available

Another surprising stats was dominance of Yoga in non-academics categories. A total of 47 percent of home tuition in non-academics category is of Yoga or close to 15 percent overall. One out of every 6 families who can afford a personal tutor are getting a yoga instructor at home. Other major category is Guitar, which dominates the music tuitions. Rest is distributed amongst spoken English, foreign languages, dance and others. Demand of a fitness or zumba instructor at home is way lower then a yoga instructor

Academics is dominated by K-12 education. Earlier, we thought that K-8 will be the biggest segment, as commuting is a big issue for younger kids. But data suggests that demand is more or less linear across all classes i.e. Per class demand is almost the same from 1st to 12th.In fact, demand for private tutors peak for class 10th and 12th. Most parents of K-8 kids are looking for all subject expertise from tutor. Science and Maths are most common focus subjects, followed by English.

Female tutors are twice more likely to be hired for tuitions as compared to their male counterpart. Most female tutors do not prefer to teach or do not possess expertise to teach class 9th or above, only 33 percent classes above class 9th are taken by female tutors against average ratio of 46 per-cent. The percentage reduces further in class 11th and 12th.In academic tutoring, overall male vs. female ratio is slightly skewed towards male tutors because of low availability. In Non-Academics teaching, Male vs. Female Tutor Ratio is more skewed in courses like music with less than ten 10 percent female tutors. In courses like spoken English, it is more evenly balanced 46 percent tutors are either college students or preparing for competitive/ government exams. 20 percent are full time teachers or tutors. Rest is distributed amongst multiple categories. Housewives makes just seven percent of overall registered tutors.
